Colchester Fibre is part of Colchester Amphora Trading, one of Colchester City Council’s commercial companies focused on infrastructure. Since our inception in 2017-18, we have taken the lead in transforming Colchester’s digital connectivity, securing many millions of pounds of public and private sector investment in this critical part of Colchester’s infrastructure.
We now operate the largest municipally-owned telecoms infrastructure in the UK, reaching from the Northern Gateway to Friday Wood, and from Stanway to the University of Essex. We have presence additionally in Ipswich, Braintree and Harlow.
This infrastructure delivers ultrafast broadband services at up to 10Gbps speeds, managed connectivity solutions, and point-to-point fibre links. Additionally, we manage the underlying infrastructure delivering the City Council’s CCTV service (almost 450 cameras) and the Helpline business, which helps thousands of older residents to live independently for longer.
We have deployed more than 90,000km of usable fibre in the ground; have points of presence in all of urban Colchester; and operate our own very high-capacity links to our peering partners at Telehouse, the UK’s main internet exchange. Our customers include residential and business segments in the city centre, south Colchester and Wivenhoe; many of the major public venues, including the Mercury Theatre, Charter Hall, and Colchester Football and Rugby Club; extensive sheltered housing schemes and several clusters of almshouses.
Our company is a commercial one with social value embedded in everything it does. Our profits are returned to our shareholder, Colchester City Council, for wider community benefit
