Colchester Fibre Brings Ultrafast Broadband Connectivity to Historic TS Colne Lightship

Colchester Fibre, part of Colchester Amphora Trading, one of Colchester City Council’s subsidiary companies, and a leading provider of ultrafast fibre broadband services in the Colchester area, is proud to announce the expansion of its network to the historic TS Colne Lightship, moored on King Edward Quay in Colchester.

The TS Colne Lightship, a former Trinity House Light Vessel dating back to 1953, now serves as the home to the Colchester Sea Cadets. This iconic vessel holds significant historical value and opens to the public on special occasions. It stands as a beacon of maritime heritage in the heart of Colchester.

With this expansion, Colchester Fibre brings state-of-the-art fibre broadband connectivity to the lightship, enhancing communications and digital capabilities for the Sea Cadets and visitors alike.

“We are thrilled to work with the Colchester Sea Cadets and extend our ultrafast broadband services to the TS Colne Lightship,” said Steven Eke, Business Development Manager at Colchester Fibre. “As a company based in the historic city of Colchester, we recognise the importance of preserving and supporting our heritage whilst embracing modern technology. This initiative reflects our commitment to providing connectivity solutions that empower organisations and enrich the lives of residents and businesses in Colchester. This has been one of our most unusual installations to date, with the added benefit that the new fibre connectivity to King Edward Quay will also shortly enable a CCTV solution to boost public safety in the area”.

David Syrett, Unit Training Officer for the Colchester Sea Cadets commented:

‘Increasingly the delivery of training for our Sea Cadets utilises digital technology, including interactive sessions and career webinars. However, it was becoming difficult to take advantage of these digital opportunities for the cadets and staff due to a very slow and inconsistent internet service. Colchester Fibre’s support has been first class and the new broadband installation has ensured a fast and effective broadband system across the ship, future-proofing us for years to come.’

The network expansion to the TS Colne Lightship marks another milestone in Colchester Fibre’s mission to deliver fibre broadband across the city. Through strategic partnerships and innovative infrastructure projects, Colchester Fibre continues to invest in advancing fibre broadband connectivity in Colchester and beyond (serving customers in Ipswich, Braintree and Harlow additionally).
